Event | Conference on "Dimensions of Doing Without" & Author Reading with Karen Duve | 1.-2.02.2024

Updated: Jan 22

In context of the project “Doing Without: Re-Shaping the Cultural Imaginary of the Affluent Society“ funded by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW), Heike Paul is co-organizing a two-day conference titled “Dimensions of Doing Without – Yesterday,Today, Tomorrow” (official title: “Dimensionen des Verzichts – gestern, heute, morgen”). The contributions are organized in three panels, providing (1) a historical perspective on discourses on the idea of renunciation and “doing without” from different disciplinary angles, (2) a synchronic perspective on current discussions about this topic from sociocultural, political, and economic viewpoints, and (3, hosted by Heike Paul) a focus on narratives and aesthetic practices with a view to the question of how “doing without” can be artistically imagined and communicated to society at large.

As part of the program, bestselling German author Karen Duve will read from her book Anständig essen?! Ein Selbstversuch ('Eating decently?! A self-experiment') , which she will subsequently discuss with Heike Paul.

The conference takes place from February 1-2, 2024, at the Schelling Forum Würzburg.

The author reading is scheduled for February 1, 2024, 7pm at Gartenpavillon of the Juliusspital, Würzburg.
