Together with Claus Leggewie, Heike Paul has written an article in the German national weekly Die ZEIT on the topic of reparations for enslaved labor in the United States. The article traces the more recent attempts to compensate African Americans financially for the harm and exploitation their ancestors suffered. As pointed out by the 1619-project, led by Nikole Hannah-Jones, this exploitation goes further back than the founding of the United States in 1776, at least to 1619, when the first enslaved Africans were brought to the coast of Virginia.
